ELEMENTARY LITERACY CAMPAIGN

Committee Vision All students are empowered and equipped to succeed because they can read, write, problem solve and think critically on grade level.

 

Description:  The Alignment Jackson Elementary Team/Committee needs your help to increase literacy skills, technological skills and remove health barriers of current 3rd grade students at Smith, Bates, Van Winkle and John Hopkins Elementary Schools. National research has shown that increasing literacy rates in elementary grades has lasting effects, including higher graduation rates and college attendance and success rates. During Spring 2015, the Alignment Jackson Elementary Team/Committee will collaborate with community partners to address potential barriers related to foundational skills, health and technology.

Target Population: 

3rd graders students at Smith, Bates, Van Winkle, and John Hopkins  Elementary Schools

What do we want to do?

Outputs:

  • Literacy training for volunteers
  • Community meetings on the topic of literacy to inform potential community partners

Short Term Outcomes:

  • Increase 3rd graders' interest and confidence in reading
  • At least 75% of 3rd graders surveyed improved their literacy skills

Mid Term Outcomes:

  • Increase 3rd graders achievement in literacy as measured by performance on STAR assessments and the 3rd Grade Literacy Promotion Exam.
  • Increase number of proficient and advanced 3rd graders in reading as measured by MCT3 and PARCC/ELA
  • Implement at least 1 community supported program for literacy, technology, and health at each school through existing and new community and district initiatives.

Long Term Outcomes:

  • Increased high school graduation rates
  • Increased college and career readiness

  • Readers
  • Listeners
  • Teaching technology e.g.,keyboarding skills,
  • Book Buddies
  • Health Screenings (Vision, Hearing, Hygiene, etc.)
  • Stress Management (Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, etc.)
  • Reading Foundational Skills
  • Library card registration drives
  • Family Literacy activities/events
  • Tutors
  • Other relevant resources and services
